Get the Stitch: How to Get Started with Your Sewing Machine

Getting started with your sewing machine

Sew much fun

Did you receive a sewing machine for Christmas? and are not sure exactly how to start your first project? Is it still in the original box?

Now it’s time to find your inner courage and unpack it. I have been there myself and have a few tips for you.

Familiarize yourself with the sewing machine manual. It’s important to know how to use your sewing machine, so take the time to read through the manual and become familiar with its content.

For videos, you can search for tutorials for your machine. But don’t panic if you cannot find a video tutorial specific to your brand and model. All sewing machines work the same way. Some have more functions than others, but it all comes down to the same principles.

I have included a few videos for you to get started.

You will need to focus on three things only:

Bobbins for sewing machines.
Start with the bobbin. Wind it and put it in place.

The first thing you would like to handle is the bobbin. That is the item that holds the lower thread. Learn how to wind it. Practice it – I still have times when it goes wrong, so don’t get discouraged if it takes you a few attempts to get it right. Then put it in place in the bobbin case.

Below is a video I find that explains it in a clear and precise way. Yes, it’s 6 years old and everything she explains go for the new machines as well. Listen and watch carefully.

There are two methods of loading (insert) a bobbin, the top loading, and the vertical (front) loading method. It depends on how your machine is built. Below are two videos, one for loading vertically and one for the top loading.

2. Next is how to thread your machine, which is the upper thread. Check if your machine has a needle threader function, if not just get the thread in the eye of the needle.

Below is a video on how to do that. Have the manual to your machine at hand as there might be minor differences from one sewing machine to another.

The stitches, learn how to set the different stitches. Then pay attention to the straight stitch. The only stitch you need for a start.

The next post will be “How to sew a simple project like a tote bag or a pillow cover.”

Have sew much fun!
